Left the campsite at 7:30 with great weather. Todays hike would be, for me, one of the most difficult and strenuous sections of the entire AT. After 1.5 miles of hiking I entered what is described in the guide book as the most difficult mile consisting of a jumbled pit of boulders. I had to jump, crawl and scramble over this area and it took me the better part of 2 hours to complete it. In three instances I had to remove my backpack and crawl through a cave - like opening. It was hard. The area is called the Mahoosuc Notch.
After hiking for a total of 15.5 miles I stopped for the night at Frye Notch Lean-to Shelter where I tent camped again. I've now, on a regular basis, been meeting southbound thru hikers heading to Georgia and there were several here tonight.
7 / 12 The weather again was nice today, and so was the hike. I stopped at mile 1942.4 and camped at Black Brook campsite. I thumbed a ride into nearby Andover, Maine, 9 miles away, for a quick resupply and then returned to the campsite.
