May 31 / June 1

I'm in Branchville, New Jersey.  Met several other thru hikers and section hikers here and along the way.  The hiking has been relatively easy as far as elevation gain and loss so its been easier to cover larger distances. The springs on the other hand are a different story.  Most are either dry or the water is un-drinkable because of a recent drought in this region.  I've had to make sure to carry enough water with me which means extra weight.

So I've decided to go into NY City since it's so close.  I've been thinking and talking about it for some time.  As well other thru hikers want to do the same thing.  The trail comes within 30 miles of the city so the opportunity is there.  I don't know when or if I will ever be this close again.  The Appalachian Trail can wait.

6 / 1   Yesterday afternoon I was able to hitch a ride, relatively easily, into Jersey City just across from NY.  From there I caught a bus into the city and am staying at the International Hostel in uptown Manhattan just blocks away from Central Park.  Last night prior to checking in I walked from the bus stop to Times Square then took the subway to the hostel.

Went to the World Trade Center museum this morning.  It was a very moving experience.  It brought back a flood of memories from that day.  I took several pictures of where the twin towers once stood.  It was errie to think that me and my son Brian back in 1998 were on top of the south tower on the observation deck and now it's all gone.

It's been raining off and on all day so I postponed going to the top of the new Freedom Tower.
