Leaving for the trail after a nice rest at the motel here in Williamstown last night. I'm getting a late start at 11:30 but that's OK. I ran into Motzart at the motel in the morning and both of us got a ride from the motel shuttle to the trail head. As you leave the city the trail goes right up someone's driveway and then disappears into the woods. I've never seen that before. I will enter Vermont sometime this afternoon.
OK I'm officially in Vermont! 👍 Goodbye Massachusetts.
Reached the Congdon Shelter by 7:30 after hiking for eight hours. I did 14.1 miles and I'm at mile1606.7. There are several tents set up and one other hiker in the shelter. They are all flip-floppers who started the trail in Harper's Ferry. I want to set up my tent but there isn't a decent flat piece of ground to do it. And there's mud everywhere from the recent rains. The trail getting here was the worst I've seen on my entire journey thus far. It's in desperate need of work. Overgrowth is everywhere. Fallen trees are everywhere. It was as muddy a trail as I've been on. The interesting part about this section is all of the huge glacial erratics that where dragged here and left during the last ice age.
I sprayed some bug spray around the entire wooden bunk area because I saw several spiders. That should keep them at bay for the night I hope. 😞
