Left the church hostel at 9 and picked up the trail just north of town.
Was able to do 19.9 miles and spent the night at Pine Swamp Branch Shelter, mile 654.4. I'm here with the Arkansas twins, Sam and Dan who go by Link and Folklore, as well as Stride another thru hiker. The weather yesterday and this morning so far, is perfect. Other than keeping you out of the rain, the shelters provide some wind protection, and it was windy last night. Temps have been in the low 40's at night and into the 60's during the day, a few times reaching into the 70's. It's been the wind that changes things quickly.
Rodadendrun, although thinning out, continues to be the dominant shrub or small tree especially near a water source along the lower elevations.
Decided to tent camp along the trail because it's nice out. Built a small fire. The stars are bright and beautiful.
The trail goes by the Audie Murphy crash site where he died in a plane crash in 1971. There's a monument dedicated to his military service. Murphy was the most decorated American soldier of World War II.
It's Saturday night and I'm at the Pickle Branch Shelter. It rained, a light sprinkle, all morning and afternoon so I stopped here at about 3 pm because it was getting cold as well. Right now I'm here by myself. I'm at mile 695.4.
