The wind blew last night until well past midnight. The mosquitoes couldn't fly. 😊 It was nice and cool and it felt good to be in my sleeping bag. It's 8 am now, I've had something to eat so I'm ready to continue my journey into the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The weather on NPR calls for overcast conditions with grey skies and the possibility of a stray shower.
The wind has stopped and the hiking so far has been good except for all of the mud bogs I'm forced to traverse. I've seen several day hikers but no backpackers yet.
Ran into the father and son team of Matt and Ethan that go by the trail name diabolical duo. They started from Springer Mtn. Georgia Feb. 28 a day before me. We've crossed paths several times on the trek. Young Ethan is only 11 and here he is hiking the trail. His dad got him an early release from school in order to do it. Matt mentioned that one of the mountains coming up, Mt. Moosilauke is said to be the second hardest climb on the entire AT and that they were going to slackpack it tomorrow. I decided to join them because of all of the wet weather and therefore wet rocks which are difficult to negotiate with a heavy pack.
We are both staying at Dancing Bones Intentional Community, a residential community in the backwoods of New Hampshire. They allow thru hikers to tent camp for free. And best of all they have a hot outdoor shower that hikers can use.
